Related rights: DVP, the Society for Related Rights of the Press, takes LinkedIn to court

DVP is taking legal action against the professional social network LinkedIn on behalf of the 381 members, press publishers and news agencies that it represents.

DVP has accused the platform of exploiting the content produced by nearly 900 press publications and dozens of press agencies* without paying out any royalties.

Since 2019, legislation in force allows press publishers and news agencies to obtain financial compensation from platforms when their content is reused online.

Over the past two years, DVP has negotiated agreements with Google, Meta and Bing, a search engine owned by Microsoft. As for LinkedIn, which also belongs to Microsoft, the accused party has declined to respond.

Speaking the day after the renewal of his term as president of DVP, Jean-Marie Cavada lamented the situation: “Despite the European directive passed in 2019, which was immediately adopted in France and establishes related rights for publishers and news agencies, it is astonishing that a major global player such as LinkedIn still refuses to provide any information about the use of press content on its services. At a time when the press is more at risk than ever, the rights of press publishers and news agencies must be protected at all cost. If the conditions for transparent and fair negotiations are not met, DVP will continue to use all means at its disposal to defend its members.
