DVP is taking legal action against the professional social network LinkedIn on behalf of its 381 members, press publishers and news agencies whose rights it represents.
DVP reproaches the platform for exploiting, without compensation, the content produced by nearly 900 press publications and several dozen news agencies*.
Since 2019, legislation has allowed press publishers and news agencies to obtain financial compensation from platforms when their content is reused online.
Over the past two years, DVP has been able to conclude agreements with Google, Meta, and Bing, Microsoft’s search engine. As for LinkedIn—although it too is owned by Microsoft—the silence has been deafening.
Jean-Marie Cavada, following the renewal of his mandate as President of DVP, lamented the situation:
“Although a European directive was adopted in 2019, immediately transposed into French law, establishing neighbouring rights for press publishers and news agencies, it is astonishing that a player such as LinkedIn refuses to provide any information regarding the use of press content on its services. At a time when the press is more endangered than ever, it is urgent that the rights of publishers and news agencies be respected. If the conditions for transparent and fair negotiation are not met, DVP will continue to pursue every possible course of action to defend its members.”
